Jeffro,
I've never seen a JW of any income level tip at a restaurant. Never. My non-JW dad, who is on a very modest income, always tips.
actually, in my experience, i have not found them to be tighter or more generous with money.
i've found them to be about the same with handling money as non-jws, though less likely to invest their money, but unlikely to waste it on cigarettes, pubs/clubs and gambling like many non-jws do.
i certainly don't find them tighter or stingier than normal people though, and slightly more honest.. what are your experiences with jws and money compared to non-jws and money?.

i had a face to face conversation with an active jw today.
i was informed that they congregations don't like the new bible being referred to as the "gray bible", so some are starting to refer to it as the silver sword.. .
WTF?
" They produce a new Bible for use in field ministry but then in the December Kingdom Ministry suggest that the Bible does not need to be mentioned if people are generally non believers, and in fact several return visits can be made before even mentioning the Bible."
Introduce them to the cult literature before the Bible. Actions speak loudest!

Yes, 'Silver Sword' is something I heard a JW in Australia say too. Blech.

I observed the tip thing when I was in the USA. I noticed the service you get in restaurants there is phenomenal! I was blown away by the fact that you just about had your own personal waiter, not the two waiters for a whole restaurant you get here.
THat's off the topic anyhoo. I can see why they'd tip a watchtower: "Giving them the chance of eternal life is FAR more valuable than a tip!" Same reasoning they use not to donate to charities who help starving children: better to witness to them rather than fill their bellies, because they're just gonna die at Armageddon anyway aren't they?
ok so at dinner we talked about death and how hard it is to deal with.

I came to think the 'new system' would be a dull place. Think of it, without suffering, where would be all the great art and literature? If there was no such thing as break-ups and unrequited love, where would the good music be? And architecture? Some of the most beautiful architecture in the world has come from religious institutions or religious devotion, from Notre Dame cathedral to Shwedagon Pagoda.
And in Paradise, who would do all the menial jobs like clean sewers and that? Would we all do every single thing we need to function individually, and not on a community basis as has been all human history? And if on a community basis, who in Paradise would want to clean the sewers with financial necessity removed? We'd all much rather pet tigers and cuddle koalas.

OMG does that really happen? Here in Australia tipping is not a cultural thing and JWs pay the waiters the exact amount of the meal while non-Jws will round the payment up or throw in $5-10 if the service was good.

OH I should have added: when it comes to gifts, they are mega stingey. JWs don't seem to make up for birthdays and Christmas by giving at other times, so when I was in as a young adult I was always getting cool stuff from my non-Jw family, while the born-ins never got anything from their parents.

I've seen JWs face mortality and I've seen non-Jws face mortality. Here are my observations: JWs aren't usually afraid of it because they don't believe they'll get tortured in hell for a mistake. But, I've noticed they're a lot more averse to it, because they are told all their lives it is not natural and they will never die. They feel like by dying they're being cheated out of life, and therefore are disappointed and a bit scared. Non JWs I've noticed will fight just as hard as JWs to avoid dying, like getting treatment and eating well, but they're more sanguine about it when the time approaches, if they know their affairs are in order, accepting death as part of life.
But of course these are just generalisations. Everyone handles his or her mortality differently. Read Cancer Ward by Solzhenitsyn as it narrates many characters and how they deal with death: some scared, some depressed, some feel cheated, some are prepared for it and see it as something inevitable. I think with JWs not seeing it as inevitable like non-JWs, I know for my part, I feared it more as a JW than I do now.
